Colchester Romans 42 Broadstairs Bulldogs 42
     - Saturday 11th June 2005

On Saturday Broadstairs travelled to Colchester to play a young up and coming side.

They have had mixed results so far this season and were keen to put up a good fight against the league leaders Broadstairs.

Broadstairs travelled with 13 players missing from the 1st squad, but were still confident of taking the full points.

The game started as expected with Broadstairs regaining possession almost straight from the kick off.

Strong running down the right from forwards Jamie Jensen and Tim Mac allowed the Bulldogs to spread the ball left and for Danny Clement to go over within the first two minutes.

A lack of concentration, which was to be Broadstairs downfall, allowed an instant Colchester reply.

Again the tackling was poor on both sides as both teams made huge in roads by strong runs off of the dummy half.

Again the Broadstairs forwards were putting Colchester Romans on the back foot.

The next attack after about 7 minutes allowed Michael Simmonds to score his first try of the season with a break straight from the play of the ball as Stuart Plumridge was tackled short of the line.

Broadstairs then upped their game and took control. Danny Clement made a fantastic run from about 40 metres to score his second and then captain Ben Bryant broke through to score the Bulldogs fourth try.

Tom Longdon kicked two out of four conversions and with two late tries by the Romans left the score 20-14 at half time.

The second half started well for Broadstairs as they increased the pace of the game and started to show why they are top of the league.

Great running from the kick off allowed Ben Bryant to score his second of the match.

The next kick off produced space on the right as Richard Smith ran half the length of the pitch to put the Bulldogs further ahead.

With the game surely sealed the Bulldogs again put the pressure on as Danny Clement made his hat trick.

One more try from the hooker put Broadstairs 42-14 ahead.

The game then took a dramatic change with five players from the bulldogs unable to continue, Phil Sykes head coach had to don his boots to make sure Broadstairs had 13 players on the pitch.

Broadstairs looked as if the game was already won and abysmal tackling and no communication in defence allowed Colchester to begin a come back.

There is certainly a lot of work for the Bulldogs to do as Colchester ran straight lines and cut through for an unanswered 28 points to draw the match 42-42, their main threat coming from their loose forward.

The message to Broadstairs is definitely defence is key.

The bulldogs have stayed top of the London League and play host to the Greenwich Admirals on the 18th June and would welcome as much support as possible - back to results

Kent Ravens 6 Broadstairs Bulldogs 80
     - Saturday 25th June 2005

After a disappointing result against Colchester and the Greenwich Admirals unable to field a team last Saturday Broadstairs were keen to make a mark against the Ravens.

Kent was the first team the Bulldogs ever played which the Bulldogs won 32-12, so Kent were keen to repay Broadstairs.

The day started poorly with the Lions defeat and this was the topic of conversation on the journey from Thanet up to London.

action from Bulldogs vs Rhinos

Again decimated by injury and unavailability the Bulldogs fielded a small squad of 16.

Broadstairs received the kick off and looked to hit the Ravens through the centre using forwards Alex White and Rob Marks.

Within one set of tackles Kent had felt the pressure losing a scrum against the head and giving away a penalty in front of the posts.

Tom Longdon kicked the two points for a good start.

From the following restart good running from Tim Maclaughlin and quick ball from Pieter Slabbert released Michael Simmonds who beat three players to score under the posts. Longdon converted.

After throwing away the game at Colchester the main aim was to keep a clean sheet.

The restarts immediately gave possession back to the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs continued their great start with further tries from Pieter Slabbert and Rob Marks, Rob was outstanding throughout the game and had to leave the field for attention for a cut in his head. Tom Longdon continued his form kicking both conversions.

The half continued with great running and expansive passing which Kent just couldn’t deal with.

After a try from Stuart Plumridge the Ravens began a comeback.

action from Bulldogs vs Rhinos

They worked very hard to put a set of six together and finally got a reward with try from short range under the posts.

This was just a small blip in the Bulldogs defence and Tim Maclaughlin and then Yan N’Dong, on his debut, continued the rout. Halftime saw the score 6 – 36.

Broadstairs were clinical in the second half. From the restart the wide running and wide use of the pitch allowed further scores from Rupert and Stuart Plumridge.

Ben Bryant the Bulldogs captain used his experience and on a last tackle put up a high ball, leaping like a Canadian Salmon he recovered the ball ahead of three Ravens players to again score for the team.

The result was in no doubt, but the Bulldogs continued.

Phil Sykes, the head coach who was playing due to the increasing injury list, received the restart and off loaded to the impressive Michael Simmonds.

Simmo carried the ball and after a great dummy went through the line, drawing the last man he released Stuart Plumridge. He unselfishly returned the ball to Simmo after the work he did.

The game finished with three scores from Sam Naden who again made his debut.

A slow start for Sam was expected, as he had never played rugby league before.

He came into his element; his explosive pace and angled running was well above the level of the defence in front of him.

The game finished 6 - 80, Broadstairs have three league games left and are now looking forward to compounding their position at the top of the league and hopefully a Grand Final appearance in their first ever season.

The final will be held at the St Peters Rec if the Bulldogs are in the final.

Broadstairs Bulldogs 30 Ipswich Rhinos 22
     - Saturday 2nd July 2005

action from Bulldogs vs Rhinos

This was a top of the table clash with Broadstairs currently on top.

The two sides had never played each other, but results had shown this would be a tight hard fought game.

Broadstairs went out hard from the whistle as had worked for them on their previous game against Kent Ravens.

The opening points again came from kicker Tom Longdon who gave the Bulldogs two points from a penalty 40 metres out.

This shocked Ipswich, who replied by putting increasing pressure on the Bulldogs back line, with high balls on their last tackle.

Broadstairs did not deal with them and Ipswich ran through to score the first try under the posts.

action from Bulldogs vs Rhinos

Having worked hard on their defence the Bulldogs were very disappointed, this showed as they came out all guns blazing from the kick off.

Great running from both Rob Marks and Tom Harvey put Broadstairs back on the front foot.

This resulted in Stuart Plumridge scoring the opening try for the local team.

After the conversion by Tom Longdon the lead didn’t last long as the inability to deal with the up and under resulted in another try for the travelling team.

This put the Rhinos 12-8 up with only a few minutes to go of the first half.

The game plan changed for Broadstairs as they went back to basics, the use of the big forwards for their first three tackles started to pay dividends as Ipswich notably tired.

This gave Tom Harvey his first try for the club, breaking two tackle to score on the stoke of half time. Broadstairs went in 14-12 up.

action from Bulldogs vs Rhinos

Harsh words were spoke at half time and a change in personnel showed Broadstairs were not going to throw this game away.

Broadstairs received the kick and Tim Mclaughlin made ground attacking the Rhinos flat defence.

Broadstairs increased the pace of the game and started to release the backs who had done so well last week.

John Bell and Michael Simmonds in the centres took the ball up to release the pace men Mark Cooper, Richard Smith and John Ball, John back after 5 weeks after a nasty concussion.

John Ball took the next opportunity to score and put Broadstairs 20-12 up with Tom Longdon’s conversion.

Ipswich didn’t seem to have any answer as Broadstairs took control.

The forwards defence was massive and the whole team have proved all season that attack is no problem.

More forward running created space on the right for Thanet Wanderers old boy Elliot Stokes to score in the corner on his debut.

Ipswich tried their best to get back into the game, managing to get one score back, but their efforts were thwarted by great tackling and a miscount on their tackles.

They turned the ball over and after one crash ball the ball went down the Broadstairs line to Richard Smith who ran the length of the field to score.

action from Bulldogs vs Rhinos

This gave the Bulldogs a 30-18 advantage.

Although, Ipswich again broke the Bulldogs line they were not going to beat the league leaders.

Broadstairs upped the intensity in defence and kept the Rhinos within their own half. The game finished 30-22.

Broadstairs host Colchester next Saturday and then travel to the Middlesex 9’s on July 16th. This is the rugby league equivalent to the world famous union Middlesex 7’s.

Broadstairs have been invited to compete along side international and domestic sides including South Africa, England U-19’s, Cambridge University and the Army.

This will be a fantastic event and Broadstairs want to take a large crowd. A coach will be run from Broadstairs up to London for the event. The cost for the day is £20(includes coach travel and entrance to the tournament).

Please contact michael.simmonds@ge.com by mail or on 07901 831135 to book your place. This is on a first come first served basis.

The closing date to book your place is 9th July as the coach needs to be confirmed. Please give your support - back to results

Broadstairs Bulldogs 46 Colchester Romans 28
     - Saturday 9th July 2005

action from Bulldogs vs Romans

In Broadstairs latest league game, the Bulldogs remained top of the table with a hard fought win over a young Colchester Romans side which never gave up until the final whistle.

The Romans started brightly but Broadstairs gained possession early and a fine backs move ended up with Danny Clement stepping off his right foot to wrong foot the Romans defence to score on Bulldogs' first set of six. Tom Longdon converted.

action from Bulldogs vs Romans

Colchester came back strongly an soon narrowed the gap to 2 points through Jason Hatcher, but Broadstairs kept throwing the ball wide and soon after John Ball increased the lead with another 4 pointer, converted by Longdon. Soon after Richard Smith got on the score sheet with a fine run and the Bulldogs were 16-4 up after 20 minutes.

The young Colchester XIII never gave up and kept making inroads into the Bulldogs defence but they never seemed to get the bounce of the ball and with quick turnover ball, Bulldogs increased their lead with two tries before half time from Chris Finneran and captain, Ben Bryant. Both tries were converted from the reliable boot of Longdon. Bulldogs lead 28-4 at half time.

Romans had the elements in their favour in the second half and were no doubt driven on by their fantastic comeback of last month and quickly replied with a try from Lee Tanner try.

action from Bulldogs vs Romans

Broadstairs were determined not to let the same thing happen again and replied with two quick tries from Mike Simmonds and Sam Figgess to stretch out to a 36-10, Toby Underwood taking over the goal-kicking duties.

To Colchester's credit, they never gave up and kept running at the Bulldogs' defence all day and sniffed another superb comeback with a brace of tries from Kyle Hutchins which got the Romans within touching distance.

But Broadstairs were determined not to let happen what had happened on their trip to Essex and tries from Tim McLaughlin and another from Danny Clement plus another consolation from Colchester, saw the game end at 46-28 to the Bulldogs. - back to results

Broadstairs Bulldogs Reach Shield Final At Middlesex 9s
     - Saturday 16th July 2005

Broadstairs Bulldogs found the going tough at the Middlesex 9s tournament in North London on Saturday but gave a solid performance to lose narrowly in the Shield Final and make sure of their invitation back next year.

Bulldogs were drawn in a tough group with favourites and 2003 winners Royal Engineers, Varsity Cup winners Cambridge University and Haringey Hornets.

Their first match against eventual winners Royal Engineers was a close affair in which Royal Engineers took a 10-0 lead into half time. Bulldogs came back into the match shortly afterwards with a Tom Brewin try and as Broadstairs pushed for the equalising try, the Engineers raced the length of the pitch to score a converted try and win the match 16-4.

This was followed by narrow losses to Cambridge University by 12-4 and to Haringey Hornets by 14-12 where Dan Clements, Tom Longdon and Richard Smith scored tries with 2 Longdon conversions.

These narrow losses meant a place in the Shield final, where Bulldogs came up against the Hornets again but again fell short with a 14-6 loss to finish in 10th place in the tournament.

The Bulldogs return to London Merit League action next Saturday in their final regular season at West London Sharks. A win will confirm their position at the top of the league, top seeding in the play-offs and a semi-final game on August 6th at St Peter's Rec. A win in that game will put them in a grand final appearance in their first ever season and a chance for promotion to the Premier Conference. - back to results

West London Sharks 30 Broadstairs Bulldogs 30
     - Saturday 23rd July 2005

Broadstairs came away from Middlesex with draw but could so easily have lost after Sharks missed a last minute conversion to leave both sides with a 30-30 draw.

Tom Longdon opened the scoring after 5 minutes when he regained his own chip-and-chase, shortly followed by a try from full-back Mark Cooper to give Bulldogs an early 10-0 lead.

Sharks bit into that lead a few moments later when an unconverted try reduce the deficit, before Rob Marks harshly had a try disallowed for a foot in touch. But the lead was increased to 16-4 shortly before half-time when Chris Finneran scored under the posts.

West London came out fired up at the start of the 2nd half after making some substitutions, a luxury that Bulldogs didn't have after travelling with a bare 13 players. Sharks quickly got 2 scores to get to 16-14.

Broadstairs' lead was increased again after Johnny Ball raced 60 yards to score in the corner. Sharks got one back before another strong running try from Finneran gave Bulldogs a 10 point lead.

Again Sharks did not give in as their subs piled on the pressure and gave one of their forwards a hat-trick to reduce the lead to 4 points again. Bulldogs responded when Longdon got his 2nd try to take his personal points tally to 14 and the lead to 10 points with 10 minutes left.

This should have been enough to see out the victory but Sharks were not to lay down and quickly got one back to get to 30-26 before a last minute try tied the scores, but Bulldogs' luck was in as Sharks kicker sliced his attempt to draw the game at 30-30.

Despite the draw, Bulldogs still finish top of the league and have gained top seeding in the play-offs. Bulldogs semi-final game will be at St. Peter's Rec on Saturday 6th August, kicking-off at 3pm. - back to results

Broadstairs Reach GRAND FINAL By Default
    - Monday 8th August 2005

Unfortunately, due to work commitments, the Met Police were unable to field a team to face the Bulldogs on Saturday 6th August 2005. Bulldogs were only informed of this at 11.45am on the day and we send our apologies to the supporters who turned up to cheer us on. Posters were erected at the ground and hopefully as little inconvenience as possible was caused. - back to results

Broadstairs Bulldogs became London League Champions in their inaugural season with a convincing 40-14 Grand Final win over Colchester Romans on Saturday to gain promotion to the Rugby League Conference.

Despite the difficult conditions at a windy and rain-soaked Streatham and Croydon RFC, the Bulldogs started strongly and stand-in captain Mike Simmonds scored the first of Bulldogs' nine tries after an interception on the right wing. Within 20 minutes of the start further tries had been added by Chris Finneran and Richard Smith along with 3 goals added by the ever reliable Tom Longdon.

action from Grand Final

Colchester Roman got one back before substitute forward Ian Lodge got on the scoresheet after an inch-perfect pass from centre Johnny Bell and the Bulldogs turned round at half time with a 24-6 lead.

action from Grand Final

As Bulldogs piled the pressure onto their younger opponents, the midfield quartet of Longdon, Bell, Clement and Stuart Plumridge were bossing the game and Bell's skillful hands were putting the Broadstairs players through the gaps that were being left by the tiring Romans XIII.

Bell got a 4-pointer himself before setting up Stuart Plumridge and then putting hooker Pieter Slabbert in and increasing the Bulldogs' lead to 42-6. The game was effectively ended as a contest when the youngest squad member, 16-year-old Rupert Syred outpaced the Romans defence to score in the corner, Bulldogs' 9th try scorer of the match.

action from Grand Final

To their credit, Colchester never gave up and kept coming back at the Bulldogs with spirited forwards and strong running backs. They were rewarded with 2 tries to reduce the lead to 30 points but there was to be no comeback as there had been in the 42-42 draw in Essex in June.

Coach Phil Sykes said, "I am proud of every single person involved with Broadstairs Bulldogs. The players, coaching staff, physio and supporters. Nobody thought that we could make rugby league work in Thanet but we have proved them wrong with a tremendous season topped off with this fantastic grand final win. We are looking forward to taking rugby league forward in Thanet with the Broadstairs Bulldogs."

action from Grand Final

Phil's father, ex-Hull professional, Cyril Sykes added that this was a fantastic win for the Bulldogs but the hard work will really start now as the Broadstairs gain promotion to the Rugby League Conference on their next step up the rugby league pyramid and play the likes of Kingston Warriors, Haringey Hornets, Hemel Stags and South London Storm..
