Rugby League Is Coming To Thanet
- Isle of Thanet Gazette, Friday 11th March 2005
A new rugby league club will start playing in Thanet this summer. Broadstairs Bulldogs will play their first match in May and will be based at the St. Peter's Recreation Ground.
With rugby league having switched its programme to the summer months, it is hoped that many Thanet Wanderers players will give the sport a try.
While the Bulldogs are offering anyone who is interested in playing league the chance to get involved, several players from the Thanet Wanderers first team have already declared an interest.
Australian, Ben Bryant - who has more experience of league than union - will be captain while Dan Clement, Chris Marston, Ben Massey, Ross Bell and Tim McLaughlin are among others who look set to figure.
The team will take part in the London Amateur Rugby League merit table and if they are successful will move into the Rugby League Conference South division, the bottom rung of the formal rugby league system.
Their nearest rivals will be Kent Ravens, based in Orpington and Greenwich Admirals.
Club Secretary Michael Simmonds said, "A few of the younger lads at Thanet Wanderers were looking at playing rugby league in London and that would probably lead to them playing union in London as well.
"We want to get as many people as we can both watching and playing and hopefully we can do well on the pitch.
"The main aims are to give people the chance to play in the summer, to give the clubhouse a use during the summer, putting money into Wanderers and there will be a real benefit in terms of fitness for the players.
"Hopefully there will also be a few players who are in the thirds or fourths at Wanderers, giving them a chance to bring them on a bit."
Simmonds said he has no worries about players adapting to the different set of rules. "Most people who will play watch rugby league anyway," he commented.
"Certain things are going to be difficult though - I've spoken to people who have played both and the main problem is getting back 10 metres from the tackle. "The way wanderers attempt to play will help us in rugby league."
While rugby league is dominated by northern clubs, there have been signs of improvement in the south, with London Skolars reaching National League Division Two.
Simmonds said, "The Super League is a long way off, but you've got to have aims. "It's another club that's hopefully going to be going for a long time and do quite well."
